Westfield WestCity Oratia Stream Entrance (to the left as you exit the centre). Can be viewed from the Oratia Stream Bridge.
This 27 metre long mural is the largest community art project in West Auckland and has been created by over 1,000 members of the local community.
The mural is the culmination of a longstanding partnership between Project Twin Streams and Westfield WestCity. For those involved it has encouraged fresh thinking about their relationship with both the stream, the wider environmental issues and created a sense of ownership and pride in the area.
Westfield WestCity would like to thank all of those involved in creating this amazing piece of collaborative art including Project Twin Streams and all the contributing individuals, schools and community groups.
Westfield WestCity is working within the community to restore the area of Oratia Stream, that runs parallel to Westfield WestCity, to its natural state and thus creating a great asset for Westfield WestCity and the Waitakere Community.
We will achieve this through the removal of all noxious plants & weeds, native tree and flora re-planting programme, ongoing litter removal programme, water quality monitoring and reporting, pest control, and creating viewing areas and scenic pathways.
We are achieving this with support from Project Twin Streams and McLaren Park Henderson South Community Initiative.
Our partner, Project Twin Streams is in the process of restoring 56kms of Waitakere stream banks. The banks are weeded, replanted with natives and maintained. The project is about many things: community engagement, stream health, natural environment and the health and recreation of people and their community.
The project also fits in with other storm water initiatives in Waitakere. It is designed to work with nature rather than against it.
