About Westfield Local Heroes

Since 2018, the Westfield Local Heroes program has awarded $4.88M in community grants to 489 successful Local Hero organisations.

Individuals and the organisations they represent are nominated for their work in the following areas:

• Family and Youth Support

• Health and Wellbeing

• Inclusion and Equity

• Community resilience

• Environmental sustainability

Three finalists for each Westfield Centre are then selected to go to a community vote, with the successful hero for each centre awarded a $20,000 grant for the organisation or group they represent. Finalists receive a $5,000 grant for their organisation or group.

How the program works?

22 February - 21 March 2022

Community members nominate their Westfield Local Heroes by filling in section 1 of an online nomination form. In the form, nominators are asked two questions about their nominee and how their work benefits the community or environment. The online form is accessible via the “Nominate Now” button on this webpage from 22nd February to 21st March 2022.

22 February – 28 March 2022

Once the nominator completes section 1 of the online nomination form, the nominee will receive an email with a personalised link to their online nomination form. The nominee then must complete section 2 and submit it online by March 28 2022 to be eligible in the program. The nominee will also provide an organisation contact, who will be sent a separate form to complete on behalf of their organisation.

2 August – 22 August 2022

Nominations are assessed by our selection panels against a set criteria to create a shortlist of three finalists per Westfield Centre. This equates to 126 finalists across our 42 Westfield Centres in Australia and New Zealand. As we receive nominations from across Australia and New Zealand, between April and July we are busy reviewing and discovering the hundreds of local heroes in our communities. We thank you for your patience as we undertake this important task.

Between August 2 and 22 we showcase all the finalists on our Westfield websites, social media channels and in our centres so community members can learn about them and cast their votes for the local heroes who will have the biggest impacts in their community.

13 September – 26 September 2022

The successful Westfield Local Hero with the highest number of community votes for each Westfield centre will be announced and awarded a $20,000 grant for the organisation they represent. Finalists receive a $5,000 grant for their organisation.

Our Westfield Local Heroes are inspiring community members who work hard to make a positive impact to their local community or environment. These are the four key things we look for in our Westfield Local Heroes and the organisations and groups they represent:

Local heroes icon 1 1 Role models: Westfield Local Heroes are positive role models who lead by example and who are trusted and respected by members of their community
Local heroes icon 2 2 Impactful contributions: Our heroes’ work or actions positively impact the communities or environment within the local area of a Westfield centre
Local heroes icon 3 3 Grants support the local community: The organisations that our finalists and heroes represent spend their Westfield Local Heroes grants in ways that directly benefit the community or environment within the local area of a Westfield centre.
Local heroes icon 4 4 Community vision: Our finalists and heroes’ organisations have clear goals on how they will continue to help their local communities thrive and build resilience. Westfield looks for additional ways to work with these organisations to help them grow their impact.
Grants will only be paid into the official bank accounts of the represented organisations or groups. Grants will not be paid into personal accounts.

*Note: the organisations or groups that our Westfield Local Heroes represent can include any type of incorporated or unincorporated group or organisation such as registered community groups, sporting clubs, not-for-profits, schools, emergency services, government bodies, authorities, profit for purpose, social enterprise and business.
