How to wear linen for every occasion

Linen has been a fashion staple for centuries. We’re not exaggerating! Experts say the linen trade has been going strong since 7000 BCE. Known for being light and breathable, it’s our go-to fabric for summer. Not only are easy-breezy linen pieces comfortable to wear on hot days, they’re also easy care (unlike other natural fibres like silk). Plus, linen wins points on sustainability – it uses less water, energy and pesticides to produce than cotton. This sunny season it’s upping its versatility game, too. Keep scrolling for the new ways to wear it now.

To the beach

Casualwear is where linen shines brightest, and there are options galore for everybody. Try a modern twin set – made up of a relaxed linen shirt and drawstring shorts – in saturated colours and fun prints. Not a fan of the matchy-matchy look? Team a slouchy button-up with bike shorts for a ‘90s fashion vibe instead. Swishy summer dresses are always a good idea, too. No matter your personal style, you’ll find something in linen. Opt for a slip dress, tiered mini or a ‘70s fashion-inspired kaftan. For him, drawstring linen shorts are an easy fit. Add polish with a linen blend short-sleeved polo shirt.

Try: Postie+, Dotti, Glassons, Hallenstein Brothers.

To the boardroom

If your office is high-key corporate, linen might not be appropriate. For everyone else? There’s plenty to choose from. One of the easiest styles to wear is a shirt dress. Team it with pumps and a softly structured blazer for a simple outfit. If you’d rather wear separates, try a puff sleeve linen blouse over a standard shirt – the extra detail makes it more work, less weekend. Similarly, if you’re a fan of wide-leg pants, go for a palazzo cut over a slouchy pair. For him, look for trim shirts that are tailored through the waist in classic shades like white or navy.

Try: Farmers or Mirrou, Tarocash.

To the bar

Love a linen party dress? You’ll find cocktail dresses of all descriptions almost anywhere you look this season (in all sizes, too – plus-size clothing brands have stepped up their game in time for summer). For something different, try a pair of high waisted belted shorts, or a midi skirt teamed with a cami and sandals. If you’re after something slinky, look for a dress or long halter jumpsuit cut from a silk linen blend. This riff on linen reads a little more formal, making these pieces perfect for summer evenings. For him, a slim-fitting suit or pair of well-cut linen trousers looks smart. Or, for easy charm, try a striped sport cut shirt with chinos.

Try: Cotton On, Pagani, Mirrou Johnny Bigg or Hallenstien Brothers.
