In these uncertain times, it’s more important than ever to support those in need. For 55 years, Lifeline Aotearoa has ensured that there is someone to turn to – someone who will listen – when people are in distress.
As growing mental health needs emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, Lifeline Aotearoa has increased its capacity to support as many Kiwis as possible, and they need your help to see New Zealanders through this.
During the COVID-19 pandemic lock down, Lifeline experienced a 25% increase in calls and texts from people in distress. On May 4 2020, Lifeline fielded 493 calls - thought to be the highest volume of enquiries in any single day in the helpline’s almost 55-year history. Contacts via text are increasing exponentially, with up to 1,500 text contacts on the busiest days.
How Lifeline helps
Lifeline provides safe, effective and confidential services to support the emotional and mental wellbeing of callers and communities. Their free community helplines, 0800 LIFELINE, Suicide Crisis Helpline – 0508 TAUTOKO and Kidsline, 0800 KIDSLINE as well as text support service HELP (4357) are answered by qualified counsellors and trained volunteers from centres in Auckland and Christchurch.
They also provide specialist counselling, corporate and volunteer training, online support for workplaces and coordinate suicide prevention and postvention activities in the Wellington districts.
