Name our cranes
With four tower cranes now gracing the skyline of the Westfield Newmarket site, local children were invited take part in the ‘Name our Cranes’, schools competition.
Westfield Newmarket recently invited year one primary school kids from area to help name three of our most notable team members – the tower cranes!
Seven primary schools submitted 13 class entries. The new-entrants vied for the chance to win official naming rights of the cranes, $500 worth of school equipment and an exclusive site visit and flag-raising ceremony hosted by Monty the Monkey.
The public voted over 600 times on Facebook, choosing Ruma Toru (Room 3) from Newton Central School as the winners to name 309 cranes, Lightning and Sharko.
New Zealand Scentre Group Staff also joined the voting, selecting Room 8 from Remuera Primary School’s Captain Craneky as the official name for the first 277 crane.
Both classes came to Westfield Newmarket to claim their prize and hoist the flags in late September, where they learnt the importance of health & safety as they proudly sported kiddie-sized vests and hard hats when on site. Monty the Monkey helped Project Manager, Matt Kingstone lead the tour with representatives from the construction team and the schools.
Once on site, both classes were excited to lead the official countdown and call out in unison, “raise that flag!” Crane Drivers waved from their cabs, tooting their horns in support of the event while proudly waving their names for all of Newmarket to see. The children’s priceless reaction to this unique community experience can be seen below.
