Also called Spring Festival, Lunar New Year is celebrated in China and many other Asian countries that kick off their new year with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. (By contrast, most Western countries use the Gregorian or Christian calendar.) The lunar calendar is, as you’d suspect, based on the moon's cycles, which means the date for New Year’s changes from year to year. In 2022, it falls on February. This year we're welcoming the Year of The Tiger.
Traditionally, New Year's Eve and New Year’s Day are reserved for family celebrations, including religious ceremonies honouring ancestors. There's dancing, an exchange of money in red envelopes and colourful decorations. Also? Feasting.
