It's back to school time - here are our pro tips

And we're back! In the blink of an eye, it's time to get those school uniforms out again, and everything that entails. Here are our top tips for ensuring a smooth transition back into the school routine for the whole family.

1. Get prepped ahead of time

In the weeks leading up to the first day of school, round up all school stationery, uniforms, shoes, backpacks and lunchboxes well before the big day so that any missing items can be replaced. Get your child involved in the getting ready process, too, so that they're mentally prepared for the new year. They'll enjoy shopping for a cool new backpack, lunchbox or special pencil case. Choosing the items themselves will also help them build excitement for the adventures ahead.

Your one-stop shop for everything Back to School is at Westfield St Lukes. Here's our go-to list:

Uniforms, socks, hats and everything in between:

2. Label everything (trust us!)

So you don't end up with a lost hat on day one, remember to label everything! Water bottles, socks, uniforms, leave no item anonymous. Fabric labels, stickers or even a faithful sharpie pen will do.

To avoid stress or confusion, it's also a good idea to hang a fun little keyring on your child's school bag so they know which one is theirs. Smiggle has a cute range that kids will love.

3. Get the look

Give your kids the confidence they need to take on another year with a fresh hairdo. Book in now at Just Cuts.

4. Pack a creative lunch

Pack your kids' favourite healthy foods, plus a special treat for them to look forward to later. For younger kids, leave a picture in their lunch box or draw a smiley face on their banana or mandarin to remind them you're thinking of them. They'll love the gesture and be excited to show their new friends too!

Remember to give your child food that they can open easily themselves. Any ‘strange’ or ‘new’ food should be avoided at first. Keep things familar. We recommend a compartment style lunch box like this one from Smiggle so they don't have to open any tricky packaging which might add extra stress.

5. Plan a routine

Start as you mean to continue and try to avoid unnecessary chaos on the first morning. Where possible, have everything laid out and ready to go the night before. Once everything is ready for to go, aim for a fun family night the evening before with a celebratory dessert and some bonding time over games. Kmart has everything you need in the games department!

6. Reward them (and you!)

Plan something special for after the first day back at school and tell them at drop off of your plans. Catch a movie at Event Cinemas and grab dinner at Nandos. Knowing this plan is in place will mentally help your kids through any stressors of that first day.

Preparation for a smooth school transition starts weeks in advance.
